A Century of Growth, Legacy, and Sporting Achievements
Kingston, Jamaica – This year marks a historic milestone in Jamaican sports as the Jamaica Golf Association (JGA) celebrates its 100th anniversary — a century of dedication to the growth and development of golf in Jamaica. Established in 1925, the JGA played a pivotal role in shaping the landscape of golf in the Caribbean, fostering talent, hosting prestigious tournaments, and championing the sport on the international stage.
A Legacy Forged in Excellence
The JGA was founded to unify and regulate the sport of golf in Jamaica, ensuring that local players had opportunities to compete at the highest level. Over the years, the association has not only produced some of the region’s finest golfers, but also strengthened Jamaica’s reputation as a premier golf destination.
From the lush fairways of Caymanas Golf Club, to the tight layout and city oasis that is Constant Spring Golf Club, to the serene landscape of Upton Estate, to the breathtaking greens and views of Tryall, Cinnamon Hill, White Witch, Half Moon and Negril Hills, golf has flourished across the island. Within 150 miles, our visitors and locals are able to play the most diverse range of courses, uniquely positioning Jamaica as one of the most attractive golfing destinations in the region, if not world.
Championing the Growth of Golf
Over the last century, the JGA has remained committed to expanding access to the game. Through junior development programs, national championships, and international collaborations, the association has introduced golf to new generations. Initiatives like the JGA Junior Golf Program and partnerships with schools and the Sandals Foundation and other corporate sponsors, have helped make the sport more inclusive, ensuring that Jamaica’s golfing future remains bright. The JGA has been instrumental in developing young talent, with many Jamaican golfers going on to compete internationally, representing the island with pride and distinction.“The Jamaica Golf Association has stood the test of time, evolving to meet the changing needs of the sport while upholding the traditions and values that make golf unique,” said JGA President Jodi Munn Barrow. “This 100-year milestone is a testament to the dedication of players, coaches, administrators, and supporters who have made Jamaican golf what it is today.”
Manchester Golf Club: A 160-Year Legacy
Even before the establishment of the JGA, golf had deep roots in Jamaica, and nowhere is this more evident than at the Manchester Golf Club, which proudly celebrates its 160th anniversary this year. Established in 1865, this historic club in Mandeville is not only the oldest golf course in the Caribbean but also one of the oldest in the Western Hemisphere.
With its lush greens, rolling fairways, and a history that spans generations, Manchester Golf Club has been a cornerstone of Jamaican golf, offering players an unparalleled experience in one of the island’s most charming settings.
“As we commemorate 160 years, we reflect on the enduring legacy of Manchester Golf Club,” said Tony Cha, Club Captain. “From its colonial-era origins to its present-day role in Jamaican golf, this club has been a gathering place for players, a training ground for champions, and a symbol of the sport’s lasting presence in Jamaica.”
Jamaica on the Global Stage
Jamaica’s rich golfing history is also highlighted by the success of homegrown talent who have competed in prestigious international tournaments, from the Caribbean Amateur Junior Golf Championship, and the Caribbean Amateur Golf Championship to regional National Opens and other regional and global events. The country has also played host to several international golf competitions, such as the Johnny Walker Championship, the Jamaica Classic, and the annual Jamaica Open, attracting elite players from around the world and showcasing Jamaica’s stunning courses.
